Antique Japanese samurai horagai, conch shell trumpet made from the shell of Charonai Tritonis and outfitted with a wooden mouthpiece. Horagai were used by samurai during war times to communicate location to each other over mountain terrain. They are also closely associated with Yamabushi, warrior monks of the Shugendo tradition. Antique Japanese tantō blade and ornately carved bone saya for a member of the samurai class. The saya case and tantō handle show a dynamic scene of nine children all sporting fans while two finely dressed women try to keep them in line. Also pictured are two smiling scholars, one holding his own larger fan while the other observes the fray with from the safety of the window.

Antique Japanese pair of jingasa, hats worn by samurai or foot soldiers. Lacquered black and marked with the mon (family crest) of the Ogasawara clan. The Ogasawara were descended from Seiwa Genji. They acted as shugo, governing Shinamo Provence during the Sengoku Period (1185-1600). This pair of hats dates to the Edo Period (1608-1867) when the Ogasawara were daimyo (feudal lords) of territories on Kyushu.
