Antique Japanese single section tansu from the Sendai region made from kuri (chestnut) wood with a red lacquer finish. Its drawers are adorned with large iron lock plates with elaborate floral motifs. The mokko (melon) shaped handles are mounted on flower shaped plating. The lockbox conceals two drawers within, and comes included with a key. A rare and beautiful kiri (paulownia) wood tansu from the Matsumoto region of Japan. The tone and texture of the wood grain pairs nicely with the elaborate iron hardware. Its drawers pull open with sturdy iron "mokko" melon style handles with large incised backplates. Two drawers towards the bottom of the piece secure into place with a short locking bar. Antique Japanese suzuri bako, or calligraphy box, made from keyaki (zelkova) hardwood with hand-forged iron hardware. The top of the box is hinged with a large, shallow compartment. The front has two small drawers with iron rings pulls. This box would have once been used for storing ink stones and other calligraphy articles.
