Rare Keyaki Japanese Large Store Todana Tansu 2 Section Edo P.
An incredible large antique Japanese merchant Todana Tansu (storage chest with doors and drawers) in 2 sections made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Originally used in a Japanese store to stock and display wares and supplies as well as provide a beautiful functional furniture accent for the merchant. Original hand made iron locks that were used to secure the contents when the store was closed.

Antique Japanese Lacquer Pair of Presentation Processional Boxes Edo
A pair of antique Japanese lacquer presentation processional boxes finished in original Urushi. Constructed of Hinoki (Cypress) wood it was made for both strength and to make it light in weight. The tops each have a hook style hinge on one side and a clasp on the opposite side where a cord or a lock would have kept the contents secure. An antique Japanese large 2 section Todana Tansu made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods that comes from the Tohoku region of Japan. Hand carved beaded wood work to the front and frame with through mortise and tenon Japanese joinery in its construction. Floating wood panels within the frames of the doors and sections used to prevent cracks from forming. All original bronze hardware with hand carved Ebony sliding door handles.

Japanese Antique 2-Section All Kiri Wood Kimono Isho Tansu
Antique Japanese 2-section biraki isho tansu (clothing chest with opening doors) made especially for storing kimono. The top section has hinged doors which open to reveal a set of 7 kimono trays which can be slid all the way out like shallow drawers. The bottom section has three large drawers. The chest is made all of kiri (paulownia) wood and has pierced hardware with designs of peony flowers.

Japanese Antique Kiri Ko Tansu (Personal Storage Chest) Late Edo Era
Antique Japanese Ko Tansu (personal storage chest). Made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. This small tansu has 5 drawers; three in a vertical row over two smaller drawers side by side. The hardware was hand made all of iron and includes round lock plates on each drawer and Kakute handles. The drawers are additionally reinforced by corner foliate decorative hardware.

Age: Late Edo Period (circa early 1800's)

Dimensions: 22 1/2" high x 22 3/4" wide x 12 1/4" deep

Japanese Chobako (Merchant's Box) With Round Locks
Antique Japanese Chobako (merchant's box) with five drawers; two small drawers side by side on the top over three drawers in a vertical row. This box is made all of Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) wood with the exception of the drawer interiors which are made of Kiri (Paulownia) wood.

The drawers graduate in size with the smallest on the upper portion of the box and the largest on the bottom. An interesting and unique feature Is how the round iron lock plates mimic this graduation of size... Click for details
