Antique Japanese gyosho bako, or merchant's chest, in a tall and slender style with many drawers. It is made of kiri (paulownia) wood with a dark brown lacquer. The drawers bear an emblem faded from age, perhaps once used to label the contents inside. The very bottom drawer has an iron locking plate. Edo age (1615-1867). Exhibited in Palo Alto Cultural Center. Size: 36" height, 11" width, 14" depth

Antique Japanese candle holder made of iron, with attractive teardrop shaped tiers that hold five candles on each side, two inside, and one main candle at its very top. Its base is rectangular and solid, with a nice patina, and it stands on three legs. Size: 60 cm height, 17" width

Antique Japanese hirado porcelain brush washer in the form of a fu dog, laying on his backside and sporting a large, whimsical smile. The brush washer sits on three short legs. The form and detail in this little guy are wonderful. Size: 2.5" length, 2.25" height

Antique Japanese tansu from the Sendai region, made of keyaki wood with red lacquered top and sides, ornate iron hardware such as mokko (melon) shaped handles, large round lockplates with incised designs (the top lock has pierced floral side designs) and a side lockbox. Japanese antique ranma (transom) to be hung over a doorway, beautifully carved with the image of a large phoenix in flight, its many tail feathers billowing gracefully around it. Size: 16" height, 48" length, 6" width
