Originally only worn by royalty and women of the royal court, commoners were granted permission to wear wonsam in the late 19th-early 20th century and then only for weddings and performances. A 19th Century Korean double Nong chest decorated with Phoenixes and dragons. Speckled with gold flecks onto dry lacquer inlaid with mother of pearl, horn and brass. The circular brass hardware is cast in the form of a shou symbology, longevity and happiness. The double doors swing out exposing the compartment's navy blue gauzy fabric. Korean antique shell inlaid black lacquer ichung nong stacking chest in 3 sections on a footed base. Exquisitely decorated all over with ornate scenes of birds, animals and flowers.
