Beautiful Japanese antique 2-section storage tansu made with all keyaki (elm) wood on the front, the top portion of the top section has a shrine compartment covered by 4 small glass sliding panels. The interior of the shrine compartment has two small compartments with double doors for displaying flat images with slatted drop in panels covering small compartments on either side. Below the shrine compartment is a very shallow full width drawer and below that is another compartment with two sliding panels. The bottom section has two larger compartments covered with sliding panels- one of which has pretty persimmon wood panels. Also on the bottom section is a compartment with a drop in panel on the right side and six drawers of various sizes. A very beautiful and unusual chest!. Meiji Period.
