Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Indonesian hardwood bench with breathtakingly detailed carvings all around. The entire back is gorgeously carved and piercing with balls of smoke surrounding two large dragons on either side of a solid central carving featuring robed noblemen and women and men carrying objects amongst trees and structures. Below the central carving is an upside down lucky bat clutching a coin. Either side of the back has a rectangular post, carved with squared spiral designs, and topped with a small fu-dog playing with a ball or xiu qiu. Carved and pierced dragons with gaping mouths form the armrests. Skirting the front and sides of the seat is a carved panel with lucky bats and flowers, ad the legs are shaped as lions' feet, topped with a taotie motif (ogre face without a lower jaw). Overall extremely attractive and eye-catching. circa 1920s-30s Size: 37.75" height, 61.5" width, 22" depth
