Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Rare Antique Japanese two section isho tansu (clothing chest) from Sado Island. Beautiful burl keyaki (elm) wood front with original lacquer finish, interior all kiri (paulownia) wood, four large drawers with three smaller drawers on the right, safe box in lower right hand corner with three small interior drawers also with keyaki fronts and iron hardware. One drawer has a secret compartment. Unusually beautiful and elaborate iron hardware with pierced, incised and raised details: the top two drawer have lock plates in the form of phoenixes with handle back plates and corner brackets in the form of kiri blossoms, second to last drawer down has cranes on lock plate and pine bows on the handle back plates and corner brackets, the three smaller drawers also have pine bows on the handle back plates and corner brackets, the bottom drawer has a pair of turtles in waves with waves on the handle back plates and corner brackets, the safe door is completely covered in iron work with a crane in the center with pine bows, the door has two silver mon (family crests). Edo Period circa: 1850. Size: 44 1/2" high x 44 1/2" wide x 17" deep.
