Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Antique Japanese isho tansu (clothing chest) from the Sendai or Iwayado area of Japan. The front of the tansu is made all of kiri (paulownia) wood and it has it's original finish and patina. A total of six exterior drawers range from large to small. The mid/lower right hand side has a safe box with 4 small interior drawers also made of kiri wood. Most striking is this chest's elaborate iron work which includes large peony shaped lock plates, and ivy shaped lock plate on the small drawer just below the safe, the cross bracing on the safe and hirute shaped drawer pulls. Edo Period (circa 19th Century) Original finish and stunning condition. Size: 36" high x 45 1/2" wide x 17" deep.
