This is an original elaborately handcarved softwood corble of a majestic Chinese Fu-Dog or lion dog guardian. Original joints on its top and side that would have kept it into place. There is so much detail in this piece, from the tendrils of the lions' tail draping above its head. Looking above like the rays of the sun. Delicately hollowed and carved xiù qiú ball underneath its front paws. The detail continues to smaller lionlike creature riding upon its back. It is beautifully carved all the way around without missing a single section. The purpose of the Chinese lion is to act as a guardian, and they have been around since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). This piece would have been meant to hang at the entrance of a building, most likely with a mate on its opposite side.
