Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Very Rare and unusual highly inlaid Korean two section chest. Decorated with nine serpentine dragons of mother of pearl and faux tortoiseshell in horn. The front Nong has a brass escutcheon in the form of a butterfly with cut out detialing in its wings. It has complete circle knob brass locks and key. The confronting 4 clawed dragons are tessellated in mother of pearl, twisted brass wires, and faux tortoiseshell in horn. The dragon's bodies continue on to decorating the sides and top of the chest. The Nong is lacquered in a deep chestnut brown and gold sprinkled technique, complimenting the brass wire cloud pattern throughout the composition of the furniture. The chest is traditionally paper lined in blue and red colored Korean paper. The Nong stand is a continuous and attached scrolling foot.
