Antique Indonesian fine wood carved kris handle. The red/brown hardwood carved in an abstract figure with a bird's beak, a mystical being, with scrolling Cirebon (Cloud) motifs throughout. This imagery is tied to tantric Bhairavist cults. The style of the kris handle is Islamic and non-representational of human form. It form is birdlike and most likely the birdlike mystical creature Garuda. Garuda being the vehicle of Vishnu. It’s form is of Cirebon/Javanese styling. The Cirebon Sultanate came into being circa 1450s and ended in last quarter of 17th century. Islamic influence mostly ended first quarter of the 20th century. Age that encompasses the Islamic influence goes anywhere from 1450s to 1920s. Many kris handles are known to be carved from Tamarind wood which is reddish brown, is highly durable, holds it’s shape well and takes a good polish. The figure's carving is very intricate and meaningful, loaded with symbolism.

The base of the carving is covered by the metal hilt and stands on an iron base.

It’s provenance is the Handley Collection, over 100 years of age.
