Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
An antique Japanese large Kyoto Mizuya Tansu (kitchen chest) in 2 sections that was made of Hinoki (Cypress), Kakinoki (Persimmon) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. The center drawers have a very unique design made by the decorative Persimmon accents making each one look like a gift box. All sliding doors have Persimmon runners used to smooth out the slide and help prevent wear at the bottom.

Japanese joinery is evident throughout the piece making use of the mortise and tenon technique. In addition, the inlaid Persimmon wood required precision workmanship for a perfect fit into the surrounding Cypress wood. The etched glass in the upper right sliding doors as well as the bronze hardware are all original to this beautiful chest.

Originally it was used in a Japanese kitchen to store water, dry foods, dishes and cookware. Its contemporary use would include using it as a China cabinet for the storage of fine porcelains and linens, a counter and matching upper storage cabinet with the addition of a stone or glass top, or a beautiful chest with an abundance of storage space.
