Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Antique Japanese rare gyosho bako (peddler's box) for a barber. A set of 3 separated boxes that fit together and can be easily carried. The largest box has 5 drawers with bronze hardware including hirute shaped drawer pulls and decorative peony back plates. The top of the box has 2 open compartments, a small covered compartment, and a handle for carrying. On the right side, a smaller box attaches onto the large box with 2 hooks. This box is narrow and has one compartment divided on the inside and opens on the top with a drop-in panel and with a slide-out panel on the bottom. This box has heavy bronze hardware with a large peony on the outward facing side. A third box attaches onto the back of the large box. It has an open compartment on the top that is divided in sections. This box also has a small drawer that pulls out from the side and is decorated with a large bronze rabbit on the outward facing side. The back of the largest box of drawers has a bronze yahazu mon (arrow notch crest). All boxes are lacquered a deep red color.
