Antique Japanese 19th century single section clothing tansu from the Matsumoto area in the Nagano prefecture. Black lacquered frame with hand stunning original finished urushi lacquer on front. Handforged iron hardware with center locks shaped in the iconic money bag shape. Overall in beautiful condition.
It is most famous for Matsumotojo, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. The city is also a good base for trips into the Japanese Alps

Matsumoto is located in former Shinano Province and was the provincial capital from the Heian period onwards. The area developed as the castle town of Matsumoto Domain under the Tokugawa shogunate of the Edo period. Modern Matsumoto Town was established with the creation of the municipalities system on April 1, 1889. It was raised to city status on May 1, 1907.
