A vintage Japanese Kamo Isho Tansu (Kimono storage chest) in 2 sections made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original metal hardware including the stylized Gumbai handles and the Plum blossom arabesque door lock plates. Upper section has a pair of sliding doors behind which lies two small drawers, a split level shelf and a pair of hinged doors that hide 4 removable Kimono trays. The lower section has 3 side by side drawers and 3 full width drawers.
The upper left drawer under the hinged doors features an elaborate security system. By pulling the center drawer completely out reveals a small wood tab that slides to the left locking the left drawer in place. By unlocking and completely pulling out the left drawer reveals a secret drawer in the back where extreme valuables were hidden.
This tansu as well as all Kamo Tansu originates from Niigata prefecture which lies on the Japan Sea side of Honshu island. The Kiri wood comes down from the mountains of nearby Aizu where the cold snow country climate produces a wood of very high density and superb strength.
