Chinese scroll painting by Huang Zhou of two ladies writing on a black board. They are beautifully dressed in traditional garb.
Huang Zhou was born in 1925 in Hebei Province. He is famous for his naturalistic paintings of people and animals. After his schooling, he ventured deep into the border areas of China to paint the ethnic minorities there. The Muslim ladies in this painting are from Kashgar prefecture, southwest of Xinjiang. Huang Zhou's work has been praised by Chairman Mao and his paintings have been gifted to leaders of foreign countries.
