Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Antique Japanese woodblock print in triptych by the artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) titled Igagoe Enemy Raid or Igagoe Vendetta. The scene depicts a historical skirmish that took place in 1634 which involved many specific and notable persons ranging from members of the lower ranking samurai class to daimyo to The Tokugawa Central Government.
"On the seventh day of the eleventh month of 1634", Watanabe Kazuma, Araki Mataemon, and two other men waited for Kawai Matagoro at the Kagiya crossroads in Iga-Ueno."
The incident was considered important enough to be recorded in "The True History of the Tokugawa", an official chronicle of the central government. Today a monument stands in Igagoe to mark the location of the skirmish.
