Antique Japanese figure of Amida Buddha (Amida Nyorai), Buddha of Infinite Light seated on an open lotus. Made of carved and gilt lacquered wood with a dark patina from many years of incense and candle smoke. His hands are in Mida no Jōin (Meditation Mudra), a mudra specific to the Japanese Amida Buddha. Just below his ushnisha (nikkei) is a crystal Nikkeishū (Nikkei Jewel), believed to "radiate the light of the world". On his forehead is a similar circular crystal urna (Byakugo) - through which the light of Buddhism is transmitted.
