Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Cast in two pieces, figure of the deity Khandoba on horseback, carrying his wife Mhalsa in his left arm. Khandoba is a deity of Southern and Western India who is still widely worshipped in Maharashtra and regarded as the guardian deity of the Deccan. The Hindu god is mounted on horseback, his sword in one hand. On his left knee is balanced his beautiful wife. Their horse is standing on a raised pedestal. Behind the couple is an ornate flaming archway centered with a five-headed snake. The arrangement is made of three separate pieces.
