A rare Japanese antique Kyoto Choba (merchant) Tansu in 2 sections made entirely of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. All original iron fittings and wiped lacquer finish including the Hikute style handles. Very unusual design of a kitchen chest (Mizuya Dansu) with storage drawers throughout the entire chest.

Two secret compartments. One features a secret hidden compartment accessed by fully removing a drawer and lifting off a false floor panel in the rear that allows the front panel to slide back. The other is a false wall behind the hinged door that lifts up and out for access to the secret area.
