This antique Korean Bandaji chest (반닫이) is constructed from elm wood with a burlwood grain front, highlighting the natural patterns of the wood. Traditionally used for storing bedding and valuables, the Bandaji (half-moon chest) features a drop-down front panel for easy access.
The chest is reinforced with hand-forged brass fittings, including butterfly-shaped hinges, corner brackets, and a large central lock plate, elements commonly found in Korean furniture design. The three upper drawers provide additional storage, a practical feature for organizing smaller items. The scalloped base and iron hardware further emphasize its traditional craftsmanship.
Dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, this bandaji chest reflects the functional and durable construction typical of Korean chests while incorporating aesthetic elements that enhance its visual appeal.
