Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Antique two section Japanese Sendai isho tansu (clothing chest). Designed for storing garments and valuables. The chest is crafted from burl keyaki (zelkova) hardwood, known for its distinctive grain patterns, kiri wood, excellent quality softwood. Beautifully poised Shishi or Botan (Peony) motif on all of the lock plates with unusual scalloped cast framing surrounding each image. Warabite handles with incised Chrysanthemums along the bottoms of each. Hinged door hides two small drawers where valuables were hidden away.

The iron fittings feature fu dog (shishi) motifs, symbolizing protection and strength. The chest includes multiple drawers for organized storage and a locking safe compartment on the right side, which would have been used to secure important belongings.
