Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
antique Northern Korean white brass Bandaji chest (반닫이) was traditionally used for storing textiles and valuables. Constructed from hardwood, it features extensive hand-engraved brass fittings, including geometric motifs, floral engravings, and a large central lock plate with stylized dragon imagery, symbolizing protection and prosperity.
The half-moon front panel (bandaji style) opens downward, providing access to the storage compartment, while the smaller drawers along the sides offer additional space for smaller items. The chest is reinforced with iron side handles for transport and symmetrically arranged brass plates, characteristic of Northern Korean craftsmanship.
