Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
This contemporary Japanese samurai-style tatami dou (folding cuirass) vest is crafted using traditional lacing techniques and materials reminiscent of historical samurai armor. The exterior is composed of rows of tightly woven cords in an alternating black and white pattern, secured with intricate silk lacing. The lower edge and collar are accented with gold and green lacquered elements, adding contrast to the design. The interior is lined with deep blue fabric featuring an embossed pattern, providing both comfort and reinforcement. A purple silk cord closure fastens the vest at the front, ensuring an adjustable fit.
Tatami dou were historically designed as flexible, lightweight armor that could be folded for portability, used by samurai and retainers for ease of movement in battle. This piece is a modern interpretation, maintaining the aesthetic and craftsmanship of traditional samurai armor while serving as a decorative or wearable piece.
