Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Japanese antique 6-panel screen painting of a mountain landscape by the artist, Yanagisawa Kien (1703-1758). A scholar and child walk along a path near a bridge. A stream runs underneath, traveling from high up in the mountains. Tall, rocky slopes reach for the sky and fade into the mist. Trees spring from crevices and ravines. There is writing on the 4th panel from the right.

Age: Edo Period

Dimensions: 32 1/2" high x 79 1/2" long

The main text is a poem by Tang Dynasty poet, Li Bai (Li Bo) that speaks of heros and kings of the past. "...Now I have arrived at the Yi Bridge, Still think of and admire his style and nerve. Look down, see into the clear, rushing water."

In the signature line at the far left, the 3 characters just above the red seals are the artist signature: 柳里恭 Ryūrikyō, an artist name used by Yanagisawa Kien.

The seal on the lower right side of the painting is 羣玉山房 the reading should be Gungyokusanbō, and this is a seal associated with Yanagisawa Kien.
