Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
An original antique Korean celadon vase dating from the Goryeo dynasty. The legant piece has a soft green glaze for which Koryo celadon is renowned, with a naturally formed crackle (crazing) throughout the surface, adding to its depth and beauty.
The form is gently rounded with a slightly flared neck, emphasizing the refined silhouette of early Korean ceramic artistry. A notable feature is the traditional kintsugi repair on the lip—a testament to the historic appreciation of flaws as part of an object’s life and beauty.
The Koryo (Goryeo) period (918–1392) is widely celebrated as the golden age of Korean ceramics. During this era, Korean artisans achieved an extraordinary level of technical and aesthetic sophistication, particularly in their development of celadon ware. Koryo celadon is renowned for its luminous glaze—often described as resembling jade—and for innovative decorative techniques such as inlay (sanggam), carving, and incising. Influenced by Song Dynasty China yet distinctly Korean in form and feeling, Koryo ceramics express a graceful balance of elegance and restraint.
