Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
An original Japanese double hinged quartered sawn keyaki hardwood tansu chest. The front lock does work (with key) to open and reveal a set of storage drawers made from kiri soft wood. Frame is lacquered with deep warm tones. Hand forged iron, all original condition.
The front is adorned with an impressive circular kanagu (ironwork) medallion, showcasing a family crest (mon) motif in high relief, surrounded by elegant forged iron strap hinges and corner fittings. The deep patina of the wood pairs perfectly with the darkened iron hardware, creating a timeless visual balance.
This piece would have originally been part of a well-appointed Japanese home, offering both storage and quiet refinement. Its compact, boxy format makes it highly adaptable for modern interiors, whether used as a cabinet, entryway statement, or tea ware display.
