Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
A pair of framed Thai zodiac fortune telling manuscripts (Phrommachat). Each accordion folded paper manuscript is a series of painted images and text. Animals of the lunar cycle are represented in groups of four, representing each quarter of the year along with writing describing the characteristics of the person born in each of those quarters. Also represented is the "mascot" figure and tree/plant of each year.
Further colorful illustrations show various scenes from the stories of Rama, Sang Thong, and Manora along with marriage matches for each zodiac animal.
This manuscript was used as an instruction manual for several methods of divination.
Painted in gouache and gold on paper and framed.
