Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
A finely crafted Japanese hanakago (flower basket) signed 尚光作 (Shōkō saku, “Made by Shōkō”), dating to the Taisho to early Showa period (c. 1920–1940). This piece features a wide cylindrical form with vertically split bamboo at the top, transitioning to a tightly woven yotsume-ami (square plait) and ajiro-ami (diagonal lattice) lower body. The basket is reinforced with a raised rim in an hexagonal shape with secured with natural vine ties along sturdy bamboo ribs.
Its precise geometry and symmetrical structure demonstrate a high level of technical skill, while the arched handle—simple and graceful—balances the form with quiet elegance. The rich reddish-brown tones and subtle patina reflect the original finish.
