Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Japanese antique pair of ceramic inu hariko dogs. Made of low-fire earthenware and painted with black spots and sweet faces. These dogs wear brightly painted bibs with gold details. A traditional mingei folk item, these inu hariko dogs were often gifts for young children or new borns. The dogs, symbols of loyalty and protection, were thought tho ward off evil spirits and guard the very young.

Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
