A finely crafted Japanese ikebana basket, woven from split and smoked bamboo with an elegant chevron-patterned body and a tightly braided handle. The surface displays rich natural tones of amber, chocolate, and charcoal—highlighting the natural color variations brought out through smoking and age.
The zigzag diagonal weave provides both structural strength and visual rhythm, while the arched handle is formed through complex plaiting, showcasing the artisan’s skill. Likely used in traditional flower arrangement (ikebana), the basket was designed to hold a bamboo or ceramic liner for seasonal compositions.
Unsigned, but representative of the regional craftsmanship seen in Kyushu or central Honshu during the early 20th century. An excellent example of Japan’s reverence for natural materials and form
