Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
An original Chinese cabinet is constructed from solid jumu (elmwood) hardwood, prized for its dense grain, durability, and warm golden-brown tones. The cabinet features a rectangular form with four drawers across the top, each fitted with traditional brass hardware, above a pair of paneled double-doors. The doors open to reveal an interior with two hidden lift-up storage compartments, a practical and rare feature in Chinese cabinetry of this period.
The sides are adorned with intricately carved dragon-form spandrels, symbolizing strength, authority, and protection. The dragon carving flows in openwork detail, giving the cabinet an elevated sense of movement and vitality. The surface retains its original rich lacquered patina, built up over generations of use, lending warmth and depth to the wood.
Able to serve both as a storage chest and table serving serface. The combination of functional craftsmanship, hidden compartments, and auspicious dragon motifs make it a superb example of traditional Chinese furniture blending artistry with practicality.
