Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
A richly hand painted Tibetan storage chest, its entire painted with a vivid palette of red, orange, green, and gold mineral pigments. The surface is adorned with auspicious imagery, including phoenix-like birds, dragons, and blooming peonies, framed by scrolling floral borders. These motifs symbolize renewal, protection, prosperity, and spiritual abundance—central themes in Tibetan decorative tradition.
The chest is arranged with a series of rectangular panels, each filled with densely painted florals and mythical creatures. At the center, a pair of hinged doors opens to reveal storage space, while drawers along the base provide additional compartments. The intensity of the red ground, balanced with layers of floral design, reflects both ritual and domestic significance: such chests were used in monastic settings for storing sacred texts and ritual items, or in households for clothing and valuables.
The surface retains an excellent degree of original pigment, showing natural age and wear consistent with over a century of use, enhancing the depth and authenticity of the piece. Its vibrant decoration transforms it from a utilitarian object into a statement of Tibetan artistry, spirituality, and cultural heritage.
