Antique Japanese single section low tansu, constructed with hinoki (Japanese cypress) frame and striking keyaki (zelkova) burl wood panels. The warm, honey-toned hinoki provides a refined architectural frame for the highly figured keyaki, whose swirling burl grain creates a mesmerizing organic pattern—hallmarks of Japan’s finest cabinetmaking tradition.
The sliding doors open smoothly to reveal ample interior storage, likely designed for textiles or household goods. Original iron hardware, including chrysanthemum-form pulls and a decorative lock plate, adds contrast and texture while maintaining the chest’s understated balance.
The combination of hinoki and keyaki was favored during the Meiji period for its balance of strength, lightness, and visual harmony. The cabinet’s clean geometry and exposed joinery celebrate the Japanese aesthetic ideal of shibui—subtle elegance through natural beauty and craftsmanship.
