Antique Japanese solid keyaki (zelkova Elm) wood sliding-door chest featuring striking quarter-sawn panels that display the dramatic swirling grain patterns—known in Japan as tamo-mokume or keyaki-itame—highly prized for their depth and movement. The chest wide front panels showcase the natural rich color variation that occur when keyaki is cut on the quarter, revealing its iconic “flowing water” pattern.
The frame is constructed from the same solid hardwood with clean, mitered corners and traditional Japanese joinery. The sliding doors are fitted with original hand-forged iron warabite-style pulls and a narrow brass lock plate at center, adding a subtle decorative balance to the strong wood grain.
