Zentner Collection: Antique Japanese Tansu, Asian Works of Art
Antique Korean bandaji chest is crafted from dense native hardwood, prized for its dramatic, flame-like grain and enduring strength. The surface displays a richly animated figure—often likened to tiger or curly maple—set within a boldly paneled façade that gives the piece a powerful, architectural presence.

The chest is fitted with original hand-forged iron hardware, including butterfly hinges, corner mounts, and a prominent central locking plate. The large heart-shaped escutcheon and hanging lock assembly are not only functional but emblematic of Korean furniture design, where metalwork served both structural and symbolic roles.

Raised on shaped legs, the bandaji was traditionally used for storing bedding, garments, and valuables in Korean homes. Its horizontal-opening form allowed it to function as both storage and furniture, often serving as a visual anchor within a room. The warm patina, surface wear, and softened edges are consistent with age and centuries of use.
