Antique Japanese Tansu Chest Rare Kyoto Choba 2 Section Hinoki Meiji
A rare antique Choba Tansu in 2 stacking sections made entirely of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware and patina. Rare design commissioned by a wealthy merchant featuring an extra wide design and a shallow depth. Upper section features 2 sliding doors with 3 side by side drawers. Bottom section features 9 drawers with 2 sliding doors and a hinged door behind which 3 small drawers were used for secure storage. Sides feature support slats used for strength and... Antique Japanese Tansu Chest Kasane (Stacking 2 Section) Kiri Meiji
An antique Japanese Kasane Tansu (stacking chest on chest) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite style handles and the full moon lock plates. Handle back plates feature a stylized Shimizu clan family crest. 4 drawers for spacious kimono storage and a hinged door behind which are 2 small drawers where valuable fashion accessories were stored. Constructed using Japanese joinery and hardened wooden nails.

Japanese Tansu Chest Biraki Mid Century Single Section w/ Kimono Trays
A mid century Japanese Biraki Kimono Tansu (chest with hinged doors) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) Wood. Two large hinged doors open to a set of three Kimono trays. Side handles used for carrying the tansu from place to place. Front door plates feature Paulownia flowers and leaves.

Age: 1940's to 1950

All original hand forged iron hardware including the Kakute style handles and the stylized Chrysanthemum lock plates. Open fan style corners to the drawer fronts. Locking pin system secures top section to the bottom. Constructed using Japanese joinery and hardened wooden nails.

An antique Japanese Cha Tansu (tea chest) made of Kaki (Persimmon) and Keyaki (Zelkova) woods. Sliding doors and drawers provide abundant storage for organizing. Large glass display doors for showcasing holiday and seasonal keepsakes. Originally used as a chest for storing items for tea service and refreshments for guests.

Antique Japanese Tansu Chest Kyushu Bodansu Kiri Meiji period
An antique Japanese tansu chest called Bodansu (chest with locking bar) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. It originates from the southern island of Kyushu. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite style handles. Six drawers were used for Kimono storage with three drawers being secured by a locking bar with key. Side handles were used for moving the tansu from place to place. Constructed using Japanese joinery and hardened wooden nails.

Antique Japanese Tansu Chest Cha Tansu (Tea Service) Momiji Taisho Era
An antique Japanese Cha Tansu made of Momiji (Maple) and Katsura woods. 4 sliding doors along the top hid a storage area where tea service acessories were kept. 2 sliding etched glass doors covered a display area where Japanese seasonal and holiday objects were showcased while the etching hid a small drawer and a storage space that the previous owner wanted to have left hidden. 2 more sliding doors, a hinged door and 2 side by side drawers round out this tansu.

Antique Japanese Chobako (Merchant Box) Kiri Edo Period & Secret Box
An antique Japanese Chobako (merchant safe-keep box) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood with original hand forged iron hardware. Acquired a beautiful 200+ year old age patina. Hinged door secures 3 drawers behind which lies a secret box located behind the side by side drawers above.

Unusual side footing purposely made to provide air flow under the box. This suggests that the contents of the box was quite heavy (like gold coins) so that it was not moved often allowing the Tatami... Click for details

An antique Japanese Kasane Tansu (stacking chest on chest) made of Kuri (Chestnut) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware and Urushi lacquer finish. Upper section has 2 large drawers, a small drawer and a hinged door that hides 2 smaller drawers. The bottom section has 2 full width drawers for spacious storage. An antique Japanese Kotansu (personal storage chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. 2 sliding doors with vertical slats opens to a shelf with 3 small drawers. 3 drawers below the doors for additional storage. All original hand forged iron hardware. Urushi lacquer frame and front outline with natural wood drawers and door panels. Originally used as a storage chest for books and small items. It would make a beautiful side chest in any room decor.
