Japanese Antique Woodblock Triptych of Sumo Wrestlers
Japanese antique woodblock print in triptych entitled "A Picture of Yokozuna Entering the Ring" by Gyokuha Kiwani (active 1900-1920). The highest ranking sumo wrestler, the yokozuna is shown in the center flanked by two other wrestlers during the ring entering ceremony. The yokozuna is easily identified by the wide white rope he wears around his waist. The referee is seated to the right, holding a wide ceremonial fan. All three wrestlers wear matching aprons with the Tokugawa mon and waves.... Click for details

Japanese Seto ware umanome "horse-eye" dish. Also called ishizara (stone ware) this type of sturdy plate with it's iconic iron oxide glazed circular motif would have been used in a rural inn to serve hearty food to travelers. An appreciation for the natural beauty of items made and used deftly by practiced hands became popular through the Mingei movement in the 20th century.
