Japanese Antique Gilt Lacquer Kobako with Inside Tray
Antique Japanese small kobako (incense box) with inside tray. The outside is decorated with a scene of a garden fence, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and daisies in gold lacquer on a nashiji ground. The interior is covered in fine nashiji. The small tray stands on tiny feet and has a pavilion scene with twisted pines all in gold lacquer on a matching nashiji ground.

Meiji Period (1868-1912)

Japanese Antique Lacquered Keyaki Box with Garden Gate and Moon
An exquisite antique Japanese large box made of keyaki (elm) wood burl and decorated with a design of a bamboo garden gate, tall grasses, chrysanthemum blossoms and the moon. Very high raised maki-e lacquer in gold and red with shell inlay. Tied with it's original tassel and with tomobako. Provenance: from a family living close to Kyoto's Imperial Palace.

Meiji Period (Mid 19th century)

Japanese 2 section Kiri (paulownia) isho tansu, or clothing chest of drawers. With hand forged iron hardware and pulls with chrysanthemum studs beneath. The top and sides of each section are branded with a medicine gourd bottle signature.

Japanese antique scroll painting of the Lucky God, Ebisu. He sits on a rocky shoreline with his fishing pole in his right hand. Tucked under his left arm is a giant fish.
Ebisu is the Japanese god of fishermen and luck. He is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune (七福神), and the only one of the seven to originate purely from Japan without any Hindu influence.

Antique Japanese scroll painting, with an arrangement representing a bounty of good fortune. Fish top a bushel of rice and are tied with roped straw in an auspicious presentation meant to bring in a bounty of fortune. Adding to it, three of the Lucky Gods make an appearance in miniature, treating the decoration as if it were a boat or their ship of good luck. Sumi ink on silk. Dates from 18th century.
