Antique Japanese multi tired chest with single double hinged central compartment. All sides are decorated with circular gold lacquered bamboo, camilas, peony scene interspersed with the gold Tokugawa Shogunate family crest. Condition is consistent with age and does show wear. Very sturdy and is 100% complete. Ready to be enjoyed for many more years to come.

Age: late Edo period (1603 - 1868)

A pair of lovely lacquered antique Japanese Hibachis (braziers) using a refined Kamakurabori technique. Featuring Chrysanthemums (Kiku) and Paulownia (Kiri) flowers and leaves with a bronze insert. Originally used as hand warmers during the cold of winter, they make elegant flower pots for plants and Ikebana flower arrangements.

An antique Japanese Cha Tansu (tea chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia), Sugi (Cryptomeria) and Keyaki (Zelkova) woods. With a design of Buddhist influence, it features 2 pairs of sliding doors, five drawers and a lift-out door. The main doors are framed in glass allowing for seasonal and cultural objects to be displayed. All original hardware and lacquer finish.

Young Nobleman and Attendants by Mt Fuji, Utamaro
Japanese antique woodblock print by Utamaro (1753-1806) of a young nobleman on horseback holding a hunting falcon. Surrounding his horse are three beautiful female attendants and a young boy holding another falcon. In the background, Mt Fuji rises from the mist.

Utamaro is most famous for his bijin-ga (pictures of beauties). He was taught by Sekien and heavily influence by Kiyonaga. Utamaro is considered one of the great masters of Japanese woodblock printing.

Japanese antique woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) of a woman and boy. The lady holds a bamboo branch festooned with decorations possibly for the Tanabata Festival. In the upper left is a blossoming branch hung with paper strips of writing (tanzaku). During Tanabata this writing would be wishes.

Antique Japanese woodblock print by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870-1949) entitled Moon at Sumanoura Beach. A lone villager walks on the beach lit by the full moon. In the foreground are gnarled pines.

Koitsu Tsuchiya began studying the art of woodblock printing at the early age of 15. He studied for 19 years under the ukiyo-e master, Kiyochika Kobayashi. In 1931, Koitsu turned to creating landscapes in the Shin Hanga style.
