Antique Japanese two-section Mastumoto tansu, made from sugi (cedar) wood with mokko (melon) handles mounted on elaborate handle backplates typical to the region, large round center lock plates with incised kiri leaf mon, or family crests. Antique Japanese trunk made of kiri (paulownia) wood with a deep red finish, bordered in black lacquer. Two iron handles are at its sides, a gourd-shaped iron lock decorates the front. The blonde interior has been marked with kanji. Edo age (1615-1867) Size: 22" height, 34" width, 15.5" depth

Antique Japanese single section tansu from the Sendai region made from kuri (chestnut) wood with a red lacquer finish. Its drawers are adorned with large iron lock plates with elaborate floral motifs. The mokko (melon) shaped handles are mounted on flower shaped plating. The lockbox conceals two drawers within, and comes included with a key. The backside of this tansu is inscribed with old kanji that appears to be denoting which area of the house it was meant to be placed in, and also states it... Click for details

A rare and beautiful kiri (paulownia) wood tansu from the Matsumoto region of Japan. The tone and texture of the wood grain pairs nicely with the elaborate iron hardware. Its drawers pull open with sturdy iron "mokko" melon style handles with large incised backplates. Two drawers towards the bottom of the piece secure into place with a short locking bar. Antique Japanese suzuri bako, or calligraphy box, made from keyaki (zelkova) hardwood with hand-forged iron hardware. The top of the box is hinged with a large, shallow compartment. The front has two small drawers with iron rings pulls. This box would have once been used for storing ink stones and other calligraphy articles.

A large framed woodblock print by artist Ouchi Makoto (1926-1989). Ukiyo-e style images of fierce warriors and a demon appear in the two front paper blocks, and have kanji that has been cut from the tops. A beautiful maiden appears in the third block, while a large wave appears in the last, a nod to the famous woodblock artist Hokusai. Ouchi has created great depth with his techniques of color gradation, shading, and perspective. The piece is signed at the bottom in pencil, and numbered 5/60.... Click for details
