Japanese Funa Tansu, or ship safe box, made from Keyaki (Zelkova) wood in an unusual wide shape with two hinged doors instead of the typical one (this style known as Ryobiraki-do). It has iron hinges, corner hardware, and a large, round iron lock in its center with multiple sliding locks and two kan (ring) handles. It is made of a kiri (paulownia) wood with original dark finish, the front of the box has ornate bronze hardware in the shape of chrysanthemum petals, locks and extensive back bracing all made out of iron. Japanese Choba from Sakata Prefecture
Japanese choba from Sakata area, Japan. Made entirely of Keyaki wood (elm) with burl wood. Heavy iron hardware, including elaborately cut lock plates with square shaped handles, the side has warabite shaped handles. The pulls for opening the sliding panels are inlaid with mother of pearl and edge with carved persimmon. Interior has one shelf. Well crafted joinery and tenons original lacquered finish in excellent condition.
