Antique Japanese natsume tea caddy in gold maki-e lacquer. The design is of fans, each with a different picture ranging from pine trees and huts to birds and a wheeled carriage. Various gold and polychrome lacquer techniques used. The inside glitters with a fine, dense nashiji.

Japanese antique lacquer inro with a scene of a pavilion built over a lake. The inro is in five sections (four compartments) and is lacquered entirely in fine gold maki-e. The scene wraps around the case and displays the detailed buildings nestled in a lush garden. On one, side a tree with large red flowers extends over the water.

Antique Japanese lacquer inro with horse and samurai on either side. The inro is made in five sections (four compartments) with very fine polychrome lacquer togidashi in a scene of a fierce samurai on horseback. On one side, he holds a war fan. On the other side, the samurai looks back over his shoulder as his horse splashes through water. The gold maki-e technique makes the inro sparkle. The interior compartments are treated with a fine, dense nashiji.

Japanese antique small lacquer box. The outside is divided into the form of two rectangles, one all gold with a scene of a vase and flowers, the other in carved red lacquer with a cloud motif. The interior is black lacquer with small nashiji circles.

Antique Japanese keyaki hardwood shibayama mounted wall panel. Carved of wood, lacquer,  bone, and mother of pearl. A flower display dragon vase of lacquer displaying clippings of flowering dogwood. Carefully carved with great detail. Condition is very good and ready to be enjoyed and hung to a wall. Low basket holds clipping of the loquat fruit with a butterfly flying just above. Japanese antique eight lobed dish with gold and shell inlaid lacquer (shibayama). Each lobe is decorated in makie, the flora and fauna of the four seasons with archaic designs set in between. The central area of the dish is depicting a female figure holding a lotus with a child attendant holding a bouquet of lotuses. The bottom is crafted in nashiji lacquer with a gold lacquer signature set in a medallion motif reading: Kaneko Zo, or Produced by Kaneko.

The gunbai (gunbai-uchiwa) is a type of signal baton and Japanese war fan. Once held by military leaders (such as daimyō) and priests in the past, it is used in the modern day by umpires in sumo wrestling. Lacquered in black with swirling clouds, and moon with sun shown on both sides.

Antique Japanese gunbai, war fan belonging to a high ranking samurai officer. Made of lacquered wood with shell inlay and with 2 large cut outs. This fan would have been used to shade from the sun and to signal troops. Though this shape of fan was not used as a weapon, it could have come in very handy in battle and there are legends of samurai heroes fighting with nothing but their war fans.
