Chinese Quan Yin from the second half of the 20th century. It is made of rare aromatic Cheng Xiang wood. The figure stands statuesque and unperturbed atop a turbulent sea holding a string of beads. The robes drape gently down the figure and almost flutter in the wind. It measures 16" tall, base 5" diameter.

Antique Chinese bronze incense burner in the form of a goose. The wings of the goose are also the lid of the incense holder. The feathers are done with great naturalism. Republic period, early 20th century. It measures 13.5" tall 8.5" long 4" wide.

Antique stone carving of Ganesha, the deity, deva, associated with the removal of obstacles. It was carved in the 19th century, acquired in Kathmandu in the 1960s. It measures 2.25" tall, 1"3/8" deep by 2" wide at base.

Antique Tibetan bronze vajra dorje. The handle has three heads topped with a horse. The vajra connects the hilt to the head of Makara where a three edged blade is attached. It was made in Tibet in the 19th/20th century, obtained in Kathmandu in the 1960s. It measures 12" long.

An interesting antique Indian tribal statue with a pair of two deities standing side by side, as if holding hands together set with an arch halo like form.The tribe is Gond, Bopal area of central India. Age: 20th century. Purchased from Katmandu in the 1960's. Size: length 4" width 1.25" height 5"

Set of two bronze Thai sculptures portraying a similar look to a pair usually seen in Thai temples of Buddha's main disciples, Ananda and Mahakasyapa. The one with hands held together is often the style seen for the image of Ananda and the other, interestingly enough, is holding a flower which represents a famous parable when the Buddha silently picked a flower and smiled, Mahakasyapa too silently smiled marking the transmission of the dharma. A small Chinese agate carving of a tiger and her cub set on a wooden stand with motif of bamboo carved along with jagged rocks. The combination of bamboo and tigers in Chinese art can be seen as early as the Ming dynasty. The tiger, often represented as the king of the earth combined with bamboo a symbol of the mind of a literati, can be seen as the ideals of the individual. Charming Chinese figure of a monkey with young monkey and a branch full of peaches carved out of beautiful orange agate, standing on an intricately carved wooden base also with peaches. Although there are earlier depictions of monkeys in Daoist texts, one more popular Ming Dynasty story from "The Journey to the West" tells of a monkey who steals a peach from the garden of the Jade Emperor. A finely carved Chinese agate in the form of a popular motif often seen in Tibet which is the windhorse. The use of Tibetan motifs in Chinese arts began during the Ming dynasty with patronage of the Tibetan high lamas and continued onwards into the Qing Dynasty. The windhorse is carrying a pecha or sutra text, a signature motif often found on windhorses. The stylized ribbons and the waves are done in the Chinese style. Porcelain polychrome statue of the noted sage, Liu Hai. Liu Hai was the noted 10th century alchemist who learned the secret of immortality from the three legged frog, Jin chan (Chan chu). The frog is known for beckoning wealth. Later, in China and Japan, the combination of Liu Hai and the frog became the symbol of fortune and wealth.
