Antique Japanese Wooden Fish Jizai
Antique Japanese wooden fish jizai, designed for hanging a pot over fire to boil. Has a long iron chain with attached hook running from the tail, through the body, and coming out of the bottom. Very detailed carving showing charring from the fire.

Charming rustic Japanese antique jizai hook for heating water over a fire, made of keyaki (elm) wood and carved in the shape of a fish, beautiful wood grain with a deep patina from years of use, an iron hook is attached to the tail, a rope or chain would have threaded through a vertical hole from head to mouth, Edo Period (early to mid 19th century). An antique Japanese Wood Buddhist altar fitting known as a keman. The hand fan like shape were thought to have originated from flower garland offerings seen in India. Wonderful Japanese antique two panel byobu screen painting in ink and mineral colors on silk, Nihonga School, depicting a scene of a group of seven crows and a single magpie near a waterfall and hot springs possibly Onsen Baths, beautifully painted churning water and falls, signed and with hanga of artist Aizu Katsumi: born Fukushima Prefecture.

Exhibited Teiten and Bunten Exhibitions during prewar period.
