Wooden carving of Daruma or Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk who lived in the 5th or 6th century CE. He is depicted as ill-tempered and is shown here with a deep frown as he meditates. This Daruma carving is painted with red, bronze, and gold lacquer paint and appears to have once been mounted as the top and bottom have holes carved into them and a metal rod going through it to be affixed to a structure, most likely a lamp. Meiji period 19th century. Size: 13" height, 11" length

Beautiful Japanese antique lacquer suzuribako (calligraphy box for writing), decorated with gold maki-e lacquer scene of pine tree saplings and roses growing near a stream, the shore is made of up of a dense gold nishiji and some leaves and petals of the rose are inlaid with mother of pearl, the interior of the box is entirely covered in a dense gold nishiji with flowers on the inside of the lid, the box has two small interior trays and it's original ink stone and copper gourd-shaped water...
