Japanese Antique Seto Ware Horse-Eye Plate
Japanese Seto ware umanome "horse-eye" dish. Also called ishizara (stone ware) this type of sturdy plate with it's iconic iron oxide glazed circular motif would have been used in a rural inn to serve hearty food to travelers. An appreciation for the natural beauty of items made and used deftly by practiced hands became popular through the Mingei movement in the 20th century.

Age: Late Edo/Early Meiji period (mid 19th century)

Calligraphy writing reads "Kameyama, Kawara Town, Sweets Shop, Made by Hataya Yasushige." Family crest is shown on opposing sides of the boxes.

Japanese antique lacquer inro with a scene of a pavilion built over a lake. The inro is in five sections (four compartments) and is lacquered entirely in fine gold maki-e. The scene wraps around the case and displays the detailed buildings nestled in a lush garden. On one, side a tree with large red flowers extends over the water.
