A rare large early Edo period Japanese Temple Ranma. Carved from a single cut of depicting three legendary spirits in Japanese folklore. Bukan and his tiger is depicted coming forth from the trees and landscape. Bukan was a legendary Chan monk who lived in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907). Antique Japanese multi tired chest with single double hinged central compartment. All sides are decorated with circular gold lacquered bamboo, camilas, peony scene interspersed with the gold Tokugawa Shogunate family crest. Condition is consistent with age and does show wear. Originally used as hand warmers during the cold of winter, they make elegant flower pots for plants and Ikebana flower arrangements.

With a design of Buddhist influence, it features 2 pairs of sliding doors, five drawers and a lift-out door. The main doors are framed in glass allowing for seasonal and cultural objects to be displayed. All original hardware and lacquer finish.
