An antique Japanese scholars table with inlaid mother of pearl (Raden). The top features a landscape scene with blooming Wisteria, a tree with flowers, birds, water side huts, borders and rippling waves of water. The scene is surrounded by a checkerboard design with a raised lip. Gold makie lacquer highlights the designs on a chestnut brown hardwood.

An antique Japanese Negoro Choba Tansu (merchant chest) made of Hinoki (Cypress) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Original hand forged iron hardware and Negoro Urushi lacquer finish. Complete with 8 drawers and 2 sets of sliding doors. The upper doors has a spacious storage area where the merchant stored his business records and books. An antique Japanese Ko Tansu (personal storage chest) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. Hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite style handles. Features 6 drawers of varying sizes, a lift-out door and a hinged door behind which 2 small drawers are hidden. Each handle has a metal backstop called Atari that made a knocking sound and functioned as a security precaution if the Tansu were opened or moved.

An antique Japanese Chobako (merchant box) made entirely of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware. Two drawers where papers, documents and writing instruments were stored. Top carrying handle to easily move box from room to room.

An antique Japanese Gyosho Bako (street peddler's chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia). All original hand forged iron hardware. Hinged door opens to 5 inner drawers of varying sizes where special wares were stored. 4 upper rings were used in conjunction with rope to provide back pack support. Unusual back handle was used to assist in lifting the Tansu onto ones back.

An antique Japanese Kansai Choba Tansu (merchant chest) made of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware. 6 exterior drawers with 2 sets of sliding doors. Upper doors and the left side of the lower doors originally used to store merchant books and records. Right side of lower doors has three additional drawers for storage of valuables. Access to the secret drawer is found by removing the lower doors, pushing back a wood bar above the upper drawer and removing the center... Click for details

An antique Japanese Funa Tansu (ship chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) wood. All original hand forged iron fittings and finish. Top handle in the Warabite design for carrying. Safe door opens to reveal 5 drawers where important documents, papers, writing brushes, an inkstone and valuables were stored. A trick secret storage box was used to hide important trinkets.

Antique Japanese small ko tansu (chest for personal use). Made all of kiri wood. 7 drawers of various size, each with a bronze hirute shaped drawer pull. Two of the drawers have round lock plates. Nice overall patina.

Antique Japanese tall merchant's box. Made all of kiri (paulownia) wood with iron hardware. The box has a total of 9 small drawers: upper drawers most likely held writing implements, tools or documents while the ink stains on the inside of the lower drawers reveal they once held ink, seals and ink stone. Each drawer has an iron hirute shaped pull and a round lock for keeping important items like the merchant's signature seals safe.
